I'm working at a non-profit organization this summer, and today an intern said something to me that I'm normally accustomed to hearing. However, they way she said it caught me off guard and I ended up feeling somewhat offended. Keep in mind, this intern is much younger than me and hasn't done as much thinking on this particular subject. She asked me if I want kids and I gave an emphatic "no". The intern then responded with, "then I guess a love interest is out of the question for you."
WHAT?! I've been asked whether or not I want to get married as a follow-up to the kid question, but no one has ever phrased it quite so bluntly. I'm trying not to get too upset, I don't think this girl meant to be offensive. However, it felt like what she was saying was, "no kids? You must be alright with dying alone." Or, "How do you expect to find another person who doesn't want kids?" She even appeared shocked when I told her that my boyfriend is also decidedly child-free. Has anyone else dealt with these types of comments/questions?
