New Year Resolutions for the Childless and Childfree

A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jen Yates from Cake Wrecks and her geek blog, Epbot. (The interview will be republished soon, so stay tuned). As a loyal reader of the Epbot blog, I was excited to see her post about geeky New Year’s resolutions. She lists easy-to-do things that everyone can participate in. Of course, Jen’s slant to the geeky realm, and since that is also my world I am more than happy to try a good number of her 42 suggestions.

But that got me thinking. What kinds of New Year’s resolutions are great for NotMoms? What kind of checklist would we want if we were going to print one out and tape it to our office wall as a reminder of fun or amazing things we can do throughout the year? I took Jen’s categories and decided to add just a few more ideas that would fit in with our lifestyles. So, without further ado:

15 NotMom Resolutions for 2018 You Want to Keep

This year, I will read:

  • One non-fiction book by an author without children. Perhaps a book about women like yourself, childless or childfree. Or, a work of fiction by a childless or childfree female writer like Octavia Butler.

This year, I will watch:

  • One movie directed by or starring a woman without children.

  • One TV show featuring women without children as a main character (not just the quirky sidekick).

This year, I will:

  • Make a donation to an organization that helps women with reproductive choices or related issues that matter to you..

  • Answer the question, “Do you have children?” with “No,” and not include any additional explanation. Believe that saying "No" is enough. However, for those willing to listen, be open to talk about your reasons for not having children.

  • Buy a product made by a woman without children or donate to a website.

  • Be positive in interactions with other women.

  • Celebrate one holiday or landmark related to people without children.

  • Travel somewhere I’ve never been before.

  • Try something new.

  • Make a real-life NotMom friend.

  • Study your family tree to find NotMom relatives you can honor in your life.

  • Learn how to cook 3 small-batch meals.

And for those playing along at home, I’ve created this NotMom printable that you can have at your desk to remind you throughout 2018.

What amazing things do you have planned for the New Year?
